Hyperboles for Kids
Hello! Welcome to the wonderful world of hyperbole. I’ve been scouring through the hyperbole archives all day long just to find a few super special sentences that we can read and enjoy with this time we have been given together. Lets get started.
1. There was a leaf in the yard that flipped over when the wind blew, and there where ten billion bugs crawling on the ground underneath.
(Saying that there are ten billion bugs is a hyperbole because the number of bugs is exaggerated beyond belief. That many bugs would not fit under one leaf.)
2. The water slide we rode down at Fiesta Waterbahn was over a mile high!
(Water slides would not be safe to ride if they were a mile high because of wind, clouds, and airplanes. Whoever said this was using a hyperbole when they told us how high the slide was.)
3. I was talking on the phone with my dog Sampson for an entire week because he was so scared when I left town.
(Saying that a dog talked on the phone for an entire week is an exaggeration because there is no way you could get any dog to talk on the phone for that long.)
4. Uncle Frankie said Mexico is a trillion miles away.
(The Earth is only about 25,000 miles all the way around, so no place on Earth could possibly be a trillion miles away. Uncle Frankie was just using a hyperbole because he thought it would be funny, but it wasn’t funny at all. He should stick to magic tricks.)
5. I played Super Battletoads for 30 hours straight yesterday.
(Do you know why this is a hyperbole? If not, then see if someone can help you figure out what makes this sentence a hyperbole. If you do know why this is a hyperbole, then see if you can write a few of your own and post them in the comments section below!)
Anyway, I hope you had fun reading these hyperboles for kids. Don’t forget to wash your hands!
